Hoima City Stadium Construction Hits Super Fast Track
Turkish construction company SUMMA is spearheading the rapid development of Uganda’s second national stadium in Hoima City, with remarkable progress being made toward meeting and potentially surpassing the ambitious 18-month timeline for completion
The $129 million multi-sports complex, commissioned by the Ugandan government, officially broke ground in July 2024 following the signing of the agreement earlier that year. Since then, SUMMA has maintained an impressive pace, ensuring visible progress in just six months.
The stadium project will feature a 20,000-seater stadium, a 2,000-seater indoor multi-sports arena, a semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, a training pitch, and outdoor courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball.
A parking facility with a capacity of over 1,000 vehicles is also underway, showcasing the scale of the project.
During their third inspection of the site, members of the National Council of Sports (NCS), including Assistant General Secretary for Administration Joseph Oluga and Engineering Officer Nicholas Zirimenya, expressed delight at the pace and quality of the work.
Supervising consultants from the Ministry of Works and Transport also commended SUMMA’s efficiency and adherence to high standards. “We are impressed by the tremendous progress made in such a short time,” Oluga noted during the inspection.
“This project is a testament to the government’s commitment to transforming sports infrastructure in Uganda and preparing Hoima City for its pivotal role in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Construction on the stadium and its surrounding facilities is already well advanced, with visible progress on the outdoor courts and swimming pool. The multi-sports complex will solidify Hoima City’s position as a major sports hub in Uganda, complementing Kampala’s Mandela National Stadium.
Hoima City has been designated as Uganda’s second host city for the 2027 AFCON tournament, a historic event that will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
The development of the stadium is expected to significantly enhance the city’s profile and economic opportunities while boosting sports tourism in the region.
