Police Maintain Presence at Kyagulanyi’s Home Citing Security Concerns

“The home of former presidential candidate Kyagulanyi. We are still having presence around the precincts of his home, like I shared earlier, and I have also shared before that we are doing it for security reasons, in the interest of the security of the country,” Rusoke said.
Kyagulanyi, a former musician and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), ran for president in the 2021 and the recently concluded 15th January 2026 elections and remains one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures with a large youth following. His political activities have often attracted close monitoring by security forces.
Rusoke emphasized that there were no current charges against Kyagulanyi and that any legal action would only occur if a specific offence were committed.
“The question as to what offence has he committed, if he commits a very particular offence, like I said earlier when I was talking about these issues, we would certainly either invite him to police or arrest him and take him to court,” he said.
“But at the moment, just know that there are very specific operational postures around his premises in the interest of national security,” Rusoke said, highlighting that the police presence is part of broader operational protocols in politically sensitive areas.
Uganda Police have previously cited national security as justification for monitoring opposition leaders, particularly during election periods or following public demonstrations. Authorities have maintained that such measures are preventive rather than punitive unless a criminal offence occurs.
