28 Nwoya Prisoners, Staff Injured in Road Accident

Nwoya, Uganda | At least 28 inmates and one prison staff member were injured on Tuesday afternoon after a Uganda Prisons Service vehicle was involved in a road accident at Paranga in Nwoya District.
“Preliminary information indicates that the driver lost control as he tried to avoid knocking a boda boda rider,” said Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Deputy Director CCA/Service Spokesperson on Wednesday.
“An inspection team has been dispatched to investigate the incident.” ChimpReports understands the incident occurred at around 4:00 PM on July 15, 2025 . All injured persons were initially rushed to Anaka Hospital for first aid.
Two prisoners with more serious injuries were later referred to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.
Authorities say all the prisoners and the staff member are currently in stable condition.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024, road traffic crashes involving government vehicles, including security agencies, accounted for 6.2% of the 20,394 road crashes recorded countrywide.
Of these, 1,318 were classified as serious, and 145 were fatal.
Boda bodas continue to be one of the leading causes of road accidents, involved in over 38% of crashes.
The Uganda Prisons Service reassured the public and relatives of the inmates that updates will be provided as investigations continue.
The incident adds to a growing number of transport-related emergencies involving security convoys and highlights ongoing safety challenges on Uganda’s rural road network.
Transporting inmates is a routine but high-risk operation, especially in regions like Acholi and West Nile, where poor road conditions and unpredictable traffic—often including unregulated boda boda movements—pose frequent hazards.
