Janet Kataaha Museveni, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, has been elected as Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for Ntungamo District unopposed.

Janet Museveni, who is the incumbent Ntungamo District NRM Chairperson, was elected unopposed. 

She was declared unopposed by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi during the district NRM conference held at Kyamate Secondary School. 

The First Lady, widely respected for her long-standing commitment to both the NRM and community development in Ntungamo, received praise from party members and leaders who described her leadership as instrumental in advancing the district’s progress.  

Ntungamo Municipality Member of Parliament, Yona Musinguzi, was elected Vice Chairperson after securing 1,162 votes. Musinguzi beat three other candidates and pledged to collaborate closely with Mama Janet to consolidate party support and reduce opposition influence in the area. 

However, the electoral process took a turbulent turn during the contest for the Treasurer position. 

A heated battle between candidates Bitariho Sebastian and Asuman Kigongo led to disorder among their supporters. Tensions peaked when Kigongo was declared the winner with 716 votes, prompting protests from Bitariho’s camp, who alleged vote-rigging and mismanagement by security personnel.

Presiding officer Miria Mirembe was forced to halt the proceedings and postpone all remaining elections to the following Monday. Supporters of Bitariho demanded a re-run, citing vote count irregularities. One supporter, Supriano Tugume, accused officials of manipulating the results, while another, Nathan Good, blamed the District Police Commander for interference that allegedly compromised the fairness of the vote. 

In response, Kigongo defended the legitimacy of his win and called on fellow party members to unite for the sake of the NRM’s future in Ntungamo.
