Besigye, Lutale Returned to Luzira Till May 21

Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the treason trial of four-time presidential contender Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate, Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, remanding both back to Luzira Prison until May 21, 2025.

Escorted under heavy security, Besigye and Lutale appeared alongside a packed courtroom that included their legal team headed by Senior Counsel and former Kenyan Justice Minister Martha Karua, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, recently released human rights attorney Eron Kiiza, the prosecution, and supporters.

Prosecutors charged that Besigye’s defence has deliberately delayed the treason inquiry, pointing to disputes over private cross-examination

The defence, in turn, accused the State of dragging its feet and obstructing a fair hearing.

They noted that a revision application is currently lodged before the High Court, awaiting determination.

State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka came under fire from the defence for “playing to the gallery” and failing to produce substantive evidence.

According to the prosecution’s case, Dr. Besigye, Lutale, and others still at large allegedly conspired between 2003 and November 2024 in cities including Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala to topple Uganda’s government by force.

The State contends that the plot went beyond mere discussion, citing statements and overt acts intended to destabilize the constitutional order.

With both sides locked in procedural skirmishes, the court will now reconvene on May 21 to decide the trial’s next steps.
