Kyambogo Suspends Guild President, 16 other Students over Protest

Kyambogo University has suspended its Guild President, Benjamin Akiso, and 16 other students for one month for taking part in a protest against fees.
During the demonstration, students opposed a policy mandating full tuition payment before registration. They also objected to a SHS 50,000 late registration fee and called for students who have paid at least 70% of their tuition to be allowed to sit exams.
Instead, the university vice chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka, suspended them, accusing them of misconduct.
“I have received a preliminary report of alleged misconduct from the Office of the Dean of Students involving your alleged participation in acts that disrupted University activities on 23rd April 2025, including but not limited to chasing fellow students from lecture rooms while lectures were ongoing, causing commotion around the University premises, causing commotion and burning tires outside the University in the area of Banda, and participating in an unauthorized demonstration in contravention of Regulation 19 of the Students’ Regulations,” the suspension letter sent to students reads.
In the letter, Katunguka told them that their actions may have constituted a breach of the university’s students’ regulations, specifically:
“In accordance with Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations, which empowers the Vice Chancellor to suspend a student if, in his opinion, such action is in the best interest of the University, you are hereby suspended from Kyambogo University with immediate effect pending a formal hearing before the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee. The suspension shall run from 29th April to 31st May 2025,” the suspension letter reads in part.
Katunguka also told them that they shall not access the university premises without express written permission from the vice chancellor.
He further asked them to prepare their defense and await formal communication regarding the charges against them and the date and time of the Disciplinary Committee hearing.
