Kenya’s Gachagua: “My Life is in Danger”

Nairobi — Kenya’s Second Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has written a strongly worded letter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing the National Police Service and intelligence agencies of complicity in multiple assassination attempts, harassment of his family, and the deliberate withdrawal of his official security.

In the letter dated April 15 and copied to President William Ruto, diplomatic missions, and international human rights bodies, Gachagua alleges a “clear thought-out scheme” by criminal gangs acting in coordination with elements of the police and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to endanger his life and those of his supporters.

He describes a series of violent incidents across Limuru, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Naivasha, and Nairobi between November 2024 and April 2025, which he claims were either ignored or facilitated by law enforcement.

Gachagua, who was once a close political ally of President William Ruto, fell out with the Head of State in late 2023 amid internal power struggles within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Tensions escalated when Gachagua publicly criticized Ruto’s inner circle for sidelining him and accused top government officials of corruption and betrayal of the Mount Kenya region.

The rift deepened in 2024 when the National Assembly controversially impeached Gachagua on allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct—charges he dismissed as “flimsy and trumped-up,” orchestrated by political sponsors aligned with State House.

“Might it have been forgotten to you, IG, I served as the Member of Parliament for Mathira… and was elected on a joint ticket with H.E. President William Ruto as the 2nd Deputy President… until the sham impeachment in 2024 on flimsy and trumped-up charges,” he wrote.

In his letter, Gachagua alleges that since his removal from office, he has been systematically targeted through surveillance, intimidation, and assassination attempts. He cites a particularly grave incident on November 28, 2024, during a funeral service in Limuru where he claims organized gangs attacked his convoy and mourners, with police officers watching without intervening.

He also accuses an inspector of police in Nyandarua County of colluding with criminal gangs during another attack in December 2024, and names several other incidents where violent disruptions occurred at church services, prayer rallies, and public meetings he was scheduled to attend.

In all these cases, Gachagua alleges that law enforcement either failed to act or actively participated in destabilizing the events.

“Clearly and as such, the NIS officers trailing me is a clear sign they coordinate with criminal gangs on my activities, movements in order to attack me,” he stated.

Gachagua warns that these threats are not isolated but part of a larger plan to eliminate him and suppress his political base. He compares the current political climate to the pre-2007 election period that led to post-election violence and international scrutiny.

“Be advised that Kenya is a Constitutional Democracy… be informed that the people of Kenya are well aware of all these incidents and might anything happen to me or my family, this country will fall into unspeakable violence,” he cautioned.

He concludes with a list of demands, including the immediate arrest and prosecution of perpetrators, reinstatement of his security detail, protection of his homes, and an end to surveillance by security agencies.

“Take firm notice that might further violence and assassination attempts be meted on me whatsoever; you will be personally responsible to the people of the Republic of Kenya and to the entire world,” he warned the Inspector General.

As of press time, the government had not issued an official response.
