Jinja Road: City Businessman Robbed of Shs 30 Million in Boda Boda Attack

Police along Jinja Road are investigating an aggravated robbery in which a businessman, Francis Baraka, was attacked and robbed of Shs 30.7 million, an ATM card, and identification documents by a group of boda boda riders.
The incident occurred on January 4, 2025, at around 10:30 a.m. at the junction of 5th Street and Mutabazi Lane. According to reports, Baraka had just withdrawn the money from the KCB Bank branch on 6th Street when the assailants, who were masked and riding motorcycles, threatened him with a panga before making off with his bag.
Speaking about the incident, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that Baraka had noticed suspicious individuals parked near the bank but chose to ignore them. “When he was coming out of the bank, he noticed the thugs had parked across from the bank. He suspected them but ignored them,” Onyango said.
Baraka, who operates as a banking agent, had followed his usual routine of withdrawing money between 10 and 11 a.m. each morning. The thugs allegedly tracked him and ambushed him as he rode his motorcycle, taking advantage of his predictable schedule.
“We advise business owners to avoid routines because it was his routine that made him an easy target. These people have been monitoring and tracking him,” Onyango emphasized.
Police are urging the public, especially business operators, to avoid moving with large sums of money without security. “If you must carry significant amounts of cash, seek police escort or hire security services from sister agencies to ensure your safety,” Onyango advised.
Investigations into the robbery are ongoing as police work to identify and apprehend the suspects. Business owners are also being reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
