Russia’s Putin congratulates Museveni on 80th Birthday

Russian president, Vladimir Putin has congratulated his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni for reaching 80 years.
Museveni celebrated his 80th birthday in a huge ceremony in Kijaguzo, Nakaseke district, attended by hundreds of his supporters.
In a letter shared online by the Russian embassy in Kampala, President Putin said that under Museveni, Uganda has registered huge socio economic transformation and consolidated its position on the world stage.
“Dear Mister President! Please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of Your 80th birthday. You rightfully enjoy a well-deserved high authority on the African continent. Under Your leadership Uganda has scored a success in socio and economic spheres and strengthened its positions in the international arena,” reads Putin’s letter to Museveni.
“In Russia, we highly value Your consistent contribution to enhancing the relations of friendship and cooperation between our two countries. I wish you good health, well-being and success in all your state endeavors.”
Putin’s congratulatory message to Museveni is seen as a sign of deepening ties between Uganda and the Russian Federation.
Uganda was one of the few countries that abstained to vote on a UN resolution condemning Russia when it invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Last month, Putin donated USD 100 million to Uganda’s military, reinforcing Russian ties with the East African country.
Back in Nakaseke, Museveni said that people’s livelihoods have significantly been boosted during his nearly 40 years in power.
“Now, when I move around, I see improvement in our houses, but when we came here during the war, you used to sleep under grass-thatched houses, but now you sleep under modern houses built with bricks, iron sheets and cement, thank you for that development,” he said.
