Museveni Pledges UGX 3.8 Billion Reward to Uganda Cranes

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has promised to reward the Uganda Cranes with USD 1 million) 3.8  billion Shillings, if the team  qualifies for the Total 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

John Bosco Onyik, the Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS) Board revealed Museveni's promise to URN in an interview, held in  Maseru, Lesotho before the Cranes team traveled back to Uganda.

Uganda Cranes beat Lesotho 2-0 on Tuesday to stay top of Group L in the qualifiers where they need only one point from the remaining two games to book a place in the finals. The team now has 10 points while Tanzania are second on five points and Cape Verde are third on four points. Lesotho are bottom of the log with two points.

Onyik made it clear that the government is dedicated to improving sports in the country and this is clear because the sports budget has increased from 3 billion Shillings to 17 billion Shillings.

Eng. Moses Hassim Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Federation (FUFA) also said that besides the good planning at the Federation, the constant timely assistance by President Museveni has helped football in the country develop.

"Going to Lesotho on a chartered flight by President Museveni was a masterstroke because we played two games in four days and managed to get six points. It is always a challenge traveling in Africa especially when you have back to back games in a short period," explained Magogo.

The Cranes returned to Africa's biggest football showpiece last year at the 2017 AFCON after 39-years of waiting. Besides the Cranes, the U-17 team will also play in the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in April in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
