Uganda’s middle distance runner Winnie Nanyondo finished fourth in the women’s 1500m final at the World indoor championship in Belgrade, Serbia.
It was an Ethiopian show in the final as Gudaf Tsegay, Axumawit Embaye and Hirut Meshesha put up a spectacular performance to win Gold, silver and bronze respectively on Saturday night.
Nanyondo crossed the finishing line in 4 minutes and 04.60 seconds. Tsegay who won gold clocked 3:57.19 minutes, with her compatriots Embaye and Meshesha who posted 4:02.29 minutes and 4:03.39 to win silver and bronze respectively.
To qualify for the final, the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist came second in heat one where she posted 4 minutes and 06.11 seconds, behind the in-form Axumawit Embaye.
Meanwhile, Nanyondo’s compatriot Halima Nakaayi progressed to final of the 800m distance when she finished third in heat three. Nakaayi, who is the reigning world 800m champion posted 2: 01.47 minutes behind Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu who won the heat in 2:01.12 minutes.
Although Nakaayi came third in heat three, her time was the third best across all heats. Nakaayi will battle in the 800m final today.
