Luweero Security Committee Suspends Parking Fees

The Luweero district security committee has suspended collection of taxi park fees following protests among the drivers along Kampala-Gulu highway.
On Monday this week drivers staged a demonstration and refused to transport passengers in protest of the continued daily and multiple taxes even after President Yoweri Museveni directed that they should stop.
They mounted barricades along Kampala-Gulu highway and paralysed transport demanding that collection of parking fees be stopped as directed by the President
On Thursday, a crisis meeting was convened at Luweero town council hall between the taxi drivers, town clerks, Police and chairpersons of Luweero town councils.
In the meeting the taxi drivers pilled pressure on town clerks of Wobulenzi, Bombo and Luweero towns to implement Museveni's directive or else they renew the protests.
In reply, the town clerks lead by Muluuta Mugagga of Luweero town insisted that they had not seen the letter and that it was addressed to Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda who is yet to communicate to them.
The the meeting resolved that the collection of parking fees be suspended for two weeks.
Bob Ssemakula, the Luweero District Internal Security Officer, who chaired the meeting said that the two weeks will enable the district Chief Administrative Officer to consult and seek guidance on the matter.
Ali Mutebi, the Chairperson of Bulemezi Taxi Operators Cooperative Society, which is in charge of Luweero taxi park, said that they will adhere to the suspension to give chance for dialogue on the matter.
